The roots of BLACK UHURU were formed in Kingston Jamaicaโ€™s Waterhouse district also known as โ€œFirehouseโ€ in the early 60โ€ฒs. Though considered to be one of Jamaicaโ€™s toughest neighborhoods itโ€™s home to several other reggae singers and musicians. It was where Duckie Simpson grew up and learned to sing from boyhood friends Winston โ€œPipeโ€ Matthews and Lloyd โ€œBreadโ€ McDonald of Wailing Souls and Bob Marley. He recorded four tracks with Wailing Souls before forming his own group.
The original Uhuruโ€™s (Swahili for freedom) were Derrick โ€œDuckieโ€ Simpson, Euvin โ€œDon Carlosโ€ Spencer and Rudolph โ€œGarthโ€ Dennis. They only recorded a few singles โ€œFolk Songsโ€ โ€œTime Is On Our Sideโ€ and โ€œSlow Coachโ€ before separating. Don went solo and Garth joined Wailing Souls.

Derrick โ€œDuckieโ€ Simpson the โ€œGong Gong Gullieโ€ is the founder and leader for reggaeโ€™s BLACK UHURU. Although going through numerous lead singers and musicians they have remained to be one of the most recognized and prolific reggae band for over 50 years.
