Representing the African Diaspora in the Americas in Lima, Peru
It was an honor as an African in the Americas to of been invited to speak at the Ministry of Culture of Peru along with historian and scholar Dr. Runoko Rashidi. I have a lot of respect for Runoko and am honored to have him return to lecture at the WorldBeat Center this Summer on Africans in the Americas. I have been visiting Peru
now for over 20 years. It’s really heart warming to see the pride in African culture has risen since the first time I went to Peru and Afro-Peruvian culture is more celebrated. June for example is Afro-Peruvian Culture Month. The activities featured symposiums, art and photo exhibits, book readings, round tables, lectures, workshops, traditional food expos, and live music by Afro-Columbian and Afro-Peruvian groups. WorldBeat Cultural Center has been researching on Africans in Latin America for many years and has collaborations in Costa Chica, Oaxaca, Mexico, Bocas del Toro, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador Brazil. Columbia, Cuba, Puerto Rico and El Carmen, Peru.
Introducing Fayida J., she was born in London, and will be curating and hosting WorldBeat’s African Diaspora tours across Latin America. Fayida is a documentary researcher, writer and translator and is based in the UK and Latin America. I’m so glad she attended my panel presentation and we were able to meet. Stay tuned for more details on WorldBeat’s first 2020 tours.

Another reason we went to Peru was to help bring the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s first citizen science kits for Lima, Peru Celebra las Aves Amazanicas. We are working to inspire the community of Lima to participate and take ownership in their interest in conservation and creating environmental awareness through the arts and science.
I’ve known George now for almost 15 years and he was so excited when I presented him the opportunity to take part in this new venture. I can’t wait to see what he makes of it and I’m also excited to extend our cultural exchange with Peru with arts, culture and citizen science.
