SUMMARY:Ascendtials Kemetic Yoga w/ Jill Manard
DESCRIPTION:Ascendtials Presents their first Kemetic Yoga class launching on Black History Month \nLed by Jill Manard\, on the lawn outside WorldBeat Center \n\nKemetic Yoga is an ancient African Yoga art form that promotes African philosophy and practices that originated from the land of Kemet. This ancient Yoga art form emphasizes the rejuvenation of the body and mind as it attempts to provide BIPOC communities with cultural roots that stem from its antique African origins. Kemetic Yoga preserves ancient African culture through deep breath techniques and movements that activate the nervous system and place the mind into a flow state\, where it emits alpha waves that are associated with deep relaxation\, increased concentration\, and emotional balance. Thus\, Kemetic Yoga’s breath techniques and movements seek to relieve stress symptoms while providing a deeper understanding of “oneness”\, as it alleviates the effects of mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Kemetic Yoga is innovative because it places an emphasis on the alignment of the vertebral column while mimicking the geometric configuration of Egyptian pyramids within its poses and movements. Kemetic Yoga’s African origins are imperative to its success\, given that it provides African cultural traditions for BIPOC participants seeking to reconnect with their African roots while attempting to mitigate the effects of anxiety and stress from their corporate jobs\, school expectations\, and beyond. Our program hopes to create a safe environment for participants willing to explore themselves through Kemetic Yoga breath work\, movements\, poses\, postures\, grounding\, and meditation\, which are vital to strengthening the human body\, while increasing its digestive system\, flexibility\, and endurance. Kemetic Yoga promotes numerous benefits for its BIPOC participants because of its emphasis on breath as the essential life force towards achieving “oneness” as it merges with movements that encourage inner harmony and optimal health. Our program is geared toward BIPOC participants\, but we welcome participants from all cultures and backgrounds.\n\nSliding scale $0-25

SUMMARY:Crystal Hologram Activation and Sound Healing
DESCRIPTION:Join us in aligning your soul with a Crystal Hologram Activation and Sound Healing with Crystal Shaman and Licensed Acupuncturist\, Najah A. Salaam and\, Reiki Practitioner and Sound Healer Lindsey Roach. \nCome and experience the healing vibration of sound paired with crystals and gemstones that are used to unlock deep parts of our souls that need healing. You will experience the healing power of the gemstones and crystals on the body\, on specific points of a group our acupuncture meridians called the Extraordinary Meridians\, that directly access the deeper parts of the soul. When paired with the healing vibrations of sound healing instruments (gongs\, crystal singing bowls\, and more) the vibrations of the crystals increase\, which facilitates deep healing. \nAbout Najah A. Salaam\, Crystal Shaman \nNajah has been practicing the healing arts since 2013\, as a licensed acupuncturist in San Diego. She has always had an affinity to crystals\, making healing jewelry for her patients for various issues. Her crystal knowledge became solidified after finding her teacher\, and being initiated into the Jade Purity Lineage of Stone Medicine – which is an oral Daoist tradition\, passed down 88 generations. She is now the proud bearer of this knowledge and offers crystal healing sessions in person\, and from a distance. Her hope in this life is to spread the healing power of crystals to all people\, so they can begin to incorporate the crystals and stones in their lives as the healing beings that they are. \nAbout Lindsey Roach\, Sound Healer \nLindsey Roach is a certified sound healing and reiki practitioner who loves holding space for others to tap into their own vibrant inner light and heart song. She is passionate about creating cosmic sound experiences that journey deep and nurture awakening; trusting that all feelings and sensations surface and unfold exactly as intended for each listener. She joyfully guides others in quieting their mind and relaxing into their bodies\, allowing them to shift into the expansiveness of the present moment through the power of vibration. She’s profoundly connected to her gongs and uses a wide variety of other instruments and sound tools to form a diverse and all-encompassing blanket of sound. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dezarie Live
DESCRIPTION:Roots empress Dezarie has blessed the reggae community with her return to San Diego after several years with a VI stylee headlining set. \nGracious Mama Africa transports the incredible voice of Dezarie to a whole new level – the highest heights. Her foundation is firmly established in songs such as “Travelers” and the title track. The brilliance and clarity of Dezarie’s voice is reverently unveiled on “Exhalt”. Gracious Mama Africa abounds with pleas for social justice and racial equality with selections like “Poverty”\, “Strengthen Your Mind” and “Justice”. \nBut to this listener\, the strength and power of Dezarie is most strikingly displayed in her condemnation of so-called civilization. “Gone Down”\, “Not One Penny”\, “Law Fe De Outlaw”\, “Slew Dem An Done” and “Judgment Come” all deliver conscious punches that penetrate the soul. \n“Do what you want\, wheresoever you please. Bombing Vieques\, yes your bombing the seas. Lock up anyone that was opposing. Speaking against the nonsense that you were doing. But babylon you gone down\, you gone down. Babylon funeral\, you gone down.” – Dezarie \nAfter receiving Atlanta’s “Best New Female Reggae Artist” award in 2001\, Dezarie returned to her native island of St. Croix. Since that time\, she has been working closely with Midnite\, the players of instruments for “Gracious Mama Africa”. Midnite’s trademark sound is fully displayed on this album. Momentous bass lines from Phillip Merchant\, classic one-drop from Dion Hopkins and the bubbling of Ron Benjamin on keyboards prevail throughout\, accentuated by Abijah’s charismatic guitar playing. \nFrom the excellent overdubs of Dezarie’s voice to the flying symbols on “Slew Dem” it is evident that Ron Benjamin worked tirelessly in the production and mixing of this album. The fruits of this labour are eloquently displayed on Gracious Mama Africa which is sure to be one of the best roots albums of 2003.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Freedom Bike Ride and Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Major Taylor Cycling Club San Diego (MTCCSD) and WorldBeat Center are honoring Juneteenth with a bike ride and celebration. This is the 2nd annual Freedom Ride for MTCCSD and participants will be riding a 54-mile course around San Diego\, Chula Vista\, National City\, and Coronado Island.  You can view the route on the Ride with GPS website.  For more information\, contact MTCCSD via email at major.taylor.sd@mtccsd.org.\n \nThe celebration will also continue indoors and outdoors 1-5PM with information booths\, a children’s bike rodeo led by the San Diego Bike Coalition\, live music and a special opening to WorldBeat Center’s new exhibit Pathways to Freedom.  \nJuneteenth Freedom Ride received a GO by BIKE Mini-Grant from SANDAG as part of National Bike Month efforts to encourage biking as an everyday transportation choice. \nFree Event \nKick-Off 7:30AM from WorldBeat Center\nRollout 8:15AM \nJuneteeth Concert Celebration 1PM-5PM \nRoute will be using Coronado Ferry (tickets $7) \nSee the Route Map Here \n \nAbout Major Taylor\nAmerican bicycle racer Marshall Walter “Major” Taylor (1878-1932) was the world’s first black sports superstar. He was world cycling champion in 1899\, American sprint champion in 1900\, and set numerous track cycling records. Nicknamed “Major” in his youth in Indianapolis and later known as “the Worcester Whirlwind” after his adopted hometown in Massachusetts\, he was the second African-American world champion in any sport (after Canadian-born bantamweight boxer George Dixon of Boston won his title in 1891). In the Jim Crow era of strict racial segregation\, Taylor had to fight prejudice just to get on the starting line. He faced closed doors and open hostility with remarkable dignity. In his retirement he wrote his autobiography\, “The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World.” \n \nJuneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. \nFrom its Galveston\, Texas origin in 1865\, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. \nToday Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day\, a week\, and in some areas\, a month marked with celebrations\, guest speakers\, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment\, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long over due. In cities across the country\, people of all races\, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others\, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.

SUMMARY:Mama Charlotte featuring film screenings
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 23rd\, 7-9pm\n\nAdimu Madyun new films\, “BEYOND TIME” & “Haiti & DEMM” featuring Charlotte Hill O’Neal\, Adimu Madyun and Brotha Peace plus our guest Mama C will be sharing some of her music and poetry\n\n\n\nCome join us for this free event at WorldBeat Cultural Center\n\n\n\nAbout Beyond Time Film\nIn the rejection phase of life a representative of Ogun is chosen by the Ancestors to regain his power regain his strength\, chosen to go beyond time to go through invisible doors opening portals into new worlds giving him access to keys that will allow him to continue his mission of clearing the path and finding the way\n\n\nAbout Charlotte Hill O’Neal\nCharlotte Hill O’Neal is known by several names. Residents of the Arusha region of northern Tanzania\, where she has lived for decades\, call her Mama C. Others call her Mama Africa because of the scarification on her cheeks and the ring piercing her nose\, and because she encourages the local youth to be proud of their culture and heritage. \nHer Orisha spiritual name is Osotunde Fasuyi. She was initiated several years ago as a priestess in the Yoruba belief system\, which originated about 10 000 years ago in present-day Nigeria. Enslaved Africans brought it to the Americas and the Caribbean\, where it syncretized with other belief systems and is now practiced throughout these areas.  \n\nCharlotte is bedecked in jewelry and beads. Some items represent Orisha deities and others are traditional Maasai beadwork. \n\nShe is a former member of the Black Panther Party\, who fled the United States with her husband Pete O’Neal half a century ago.  \nCharlotte speaks Swahili with a Midwest drawl and her skin is decorated with tattoos: a black panther on her left shoulder and Sankofa\, a symbol the Akan people of Ghana use to represent the importance of gaining knowledge and wisdom from the past\, on her arm. African instruments\, including the stringed nyatiti traditionally played by the Luo of present-day Kenya\, replace the gun once strapped across her body.
