Due to his and other freed African and Indigenous slaves efforts, the first free town in the Americas was born.

The town of Yanga in Veracruz, Mexico. Every year people in Yanga celebrate this great hero with the annual "Carnival en Negritude" which began in 1986. WorldBeat Cultural Center continues this tradition for the first annual celebration in Tijuana, Mexico with reggae giant Eek-A-Mouse.
